A Quick History of The Lion King Musical

The Lion King premiered on Broadway in 1997 at the New Amsterdam Theatre, after having a very positive reception in its preview at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis. In 2006, the production moved theaters just two blocks away, to the Minskoff Theatre, the musical’s current home.

It is Broadway's third longest-running show in history after The Phantom of The Opera and Chicago, and it has the highest-grossing box office record on Broadway with over $1 billion dollars. Since 2002, The Lion King has been produced in various parts of the world, captivating audiences with its innovative puppetry, intricate costumes, and breathtaking music.

The original run of the show was directed by Julie Taymor, who also designed the costumes and co-designed the masks and puppetry. Just like in the movie, the musical's score was composed by Elton John and Tim Rice, with additional music and lyrics by Lebo M., Mark Mancina, and Hans Zimmer.

The Lion King musical has won numerous accolades, including six Tony Awards, eight Drama Desk Awards, six Outer Critics Circle Awards, and one Theatre World Award.

Production of the Lion King Musical

The original Broadway cast of the musical featured Tsidii Le Loka as Rafiki, Scott Irby-Ranniar as Young Simba, and Jason Raize as Adult Simba. The current Broadway cast includes Vincent Jamal Hooper as Simba, L. Steven Taylor as Mufasa, and Pearl Khwezi as Nala, while the North American Tour cast stars Mark Hargrave as Scar, Gerald Ramsey as Mufasa, and Buyi Zama as Rafiki.

How Long is the Lion King Musical?

To offer insight into the musical's structure, let's delve into the breakdown of the show. Act 1 unfolds over approximately 1 hour and 5 minutes, followed by a 15-minute intermission. Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco

San Francisco's cherished historic landmark, the Orpheum Theatre, has a rich legacy dating back to 1926, when it was originally known as the Pantages Theatre. Designed by the renowned architect B. Marcus Priteca for Alexander Pantages, the theatre hosted its grand opening with Sydney Chaplin's Oh, What a Nurse on the screen and vaudeville acts on the stage. Since then, it has hosted the world’s best musical and theatrical performances.

Located in San Francisco's Civic Center district and with a seating capacity of 2,197 patrons, the theatre stands as a testament to exceptional acoustics and historical allure. The Lion King’s stop at the theatre will happen between November 22 and December 30.

This Minneapolis gem was inaugurated in 1921, and it was designed in the Beaux-Arts style by the architectural firm Rapp and Rapp. With a capacity of over 2,579 patrons, it boasts an opulent interior with intricate detailing and a grand chandelier.
